There's more to Tidy Towns than tidying!
When people hear “TidyTowns”, they often think of litter picking, planting and painting. These are important, but the competition — and our work in Portmagee — covers much more than that.
Portmagee is assessed across eight different areas, so there are lots of ways to get involved depending on what interests you.
The eight TidyTowns categories are:
Community – Your Planning & Involvement
How the community works together, plans projects and involves people of all ages.Streetscape & Public Places

Could you help us?
You don't have to join the committee to be part of Portmagee Tidy Towns.
In fact, some of the jobs we need help with might suit someone who has a particular hobby or interest and would enjoy taking responsibility for one small area.
Interested in nature and wildlife?
You might enjoy helping us with:
Bird watching and recording – keeping a record of the bird species seen around Portmagee, the shoreline and surrounding habitats.
Butterfly counting – recording which butterflies visit our Pollinator Pathway and other biodiversity areas.
Bee and pollinator surveys – helping us find out which bees, hoverflies and other pollinators are using the village.
iNaturalist recording – photographing plants, insects, birds and other wildlife and helping us build up a proper digital record of biodiversity in Portmagee.
Biodiversity mapping – recording habitats, native plants, hedgerows, stone walls, nesting areas and other wildlife features.
Gunnera tracking – helping us map where Gunnera is appearing and keeping a record of whether areas are spreading or being brought under control.
Wildflower recording – identifying and recording the native flowers appearing in our meadows, verges and reduced-mowing areas.
Coastal wildlife – recording what can be found along our shoreline and intertidal areas.
Dark skies and nocturnal wildlife – helping with light surveys, moths, bats and other nighttime biodiversity.
Or perhaps your interest is something completely different?
Opportunities such as local history and genealogy; old photographs; interviewing older residents and recording memories; photography and video; gardening and plants; mapping and walking routes; recycling and sustainability; energy; social media; graphic design; writing; schools and children's projects; coastal clean-ups; monitoring litter; grant research; and helping to photograph and document projects throughout the year.
You don't have to attend meetings or make a big commitment. Even taking on one small project or helping us record something you already enjoy could make a real difference.
